PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a flat-bed type image reader capable of detecting an original size without the use of a sensor, accurately reading an original image and making an original reading time fixed regardless of how to place the original. SOLUTION: This flat-bed type image reader is provided with first and second image reading and scanning means S1 and S2 which move in an orthogonal direction with respect to a platen glass, an image comparing and discriminating means 14 for comparing image data obtained by sequentially moving the first and second image reading and scanning means S1 and S2 to complete reading and scanning and for discriminating the expansion of image data, and a print output control means 16 for selecting optimum recording paper 18 in accordance with a discrimination result by the discriminating means 14 and performing a printing output.
