PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce overvoltage in a methanol electrode of a methanol fuel cell, increase output voltage, and make high rate discharge possible by using a catalyst comprising platinum or a platinum alloy and Lewis acid containing a rare earth element. SOLUTION: A catalyst comprising platinum or a platinum alloy, and Lewis acid containing at least one rare earth element selected from the group comprising lanthanoide elements, scandium, and yttrium is used in a methanol electrode. The Lewis acid is constituted by coordinating a compound having -CF2 SO3 <-> group in the molecule to the rare earth element. |
