Cells (A) of a stable cell line that have an inactive X chromosome and express a fusion protein (FP) consisting of a heterochromatin-associated protein (I) and a fluorescent protein (II), are new. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) fusion protein (FP1; 616 amino acid sequence reproduced) comprising macroH2A1.2 (Ia) and yellow fluorescent protein (YFP); (2) nucleic acid sequence of 1851 bp (reproduced) that encodes FP1; (3) methods for preparing (A); (4) cells obtained by method (3); (5) process for monitoring development of the texture of chromatin; and (6) process for screening agents for their ability to modify the texture of chromatin.
