PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a modifier for sewage or sludge which suppresses the occurrence of an offensive smell component without exerting an adverse effect on sewage or sludge, and to provide a modifying method. SOLUTION: It is considered that secondary synthetic metabolism actively acts on an actinomyces living in sewage or sludge by allowing copper ions to be present in the sewage or sludge to accelerate the production of an antibiotic, the synthesis of melanin, or the like, and sulfur is taken in the synthesized antibiotic or melanin to be fixed as a stable organic substance. Since sulfur is not taken in the offensive smell component such as hydrogen sulfide, methyl mercapton, it is estimated that the formation of the offensive smell component can be suppressed. That is, by allowing copper ions to be present in sewage or sludge, the sewage or sludge can be modified so as not to produce the offensive smell component. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
