PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display element which is excellent in stability and in breakdown strength without impairing an electric field responsiveness of a liquid crystal and attains a high contrast display, and to provide the method for manufacturing the element at a low cost. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display element having a dimmer layer composed of a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal substance and a gelation agent to make the liquid crystal substance gelate between a pair of substrates equipped with electrodes, density of a network structure of the dimmer layer brought about by the gelation agent is made higher in a non-displaying part (a black matrix) 13 than in a display part (a pixel) 11.
