PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To independently modulate scanning velocities of a plurality of electron beams having beam spacings. SOLUTION: The contour of an image is made clear by making a current flow through velocity modulation coils 27A, 27B, 27C, 28A, 28B and 28C, and modulating scanning velocities of a plurality of electron beams 19A, 19B emitted from an electron gun housed in a neck of a cathode ray tube. The velocity modulation coils are constructed into such coil shapes that upper coils 27A, 27B and 27C and lower coils 28A, 28B and 28C generate asymmetric quadrupole magnetic fields, respectively. The scanning velocities of the plurality of electron beams 19A, 19B are independently modulated by an independent magnetic field obtained from those two velocity modulation coils.
