PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a differential current-perpendicular-to-the-plane (CPP) type GMR sensor having non-magnetic high conductivity leads to achieve low lead wire resistance. SOLUTION: There is disclosed the differential current-perpendicular-to-the plane (CPP) type giant magnetoresistance (GMR) sensor 400 having non-magnetic high conductivity lead wires 418 and 420 to achieve low lead resistance. The sensor 400 consists of a first spin valve sensor (an SV sensor) 410, a second SV sensor 412 and a metal gap layer 414 disposed between the sensors 410 and 420. Because of the differential operation of the sensor 400, there is no need for shield layers to screen the sensor from stray magnetic fields. The shield layers are replaced with thick nonmagnetic lead layers 418 and 420 having high conductivity to reduce the lead resistance of the sensor. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
