GENETIC VARIATION AFFECTING BLOOD PRESSURE LEVEL OF HEME OXYGENASE-1 GENE PROMOTER REGION

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To elucidate the relationship between a variation in a promoter region of heme oxygenase-1 gene (HMOX-1 gene) and essential hypertension in females and to provide a method for testing whether or not a subject female is susceptible to the essential hypertension and a reagent for the testing. SOLUTION: The relationship between the variation at a polymorphic site in the promoter region of the HMOX-1 gene and the essential hypertension in the females is found out. Furthermore, it is found out that the promoter activity of the HMOX-1 gene is significantly high as compared with that without any variation caused therein when the variation is caused at the polymorphic site in the promoter region of the HMOX-1 gene. A judgment whether or not the subject female is susceptible to the essential hypertension is made by analyzing the genotype at the polymorphic site in the promoter region of the HMOX-1 gene utilizing the resultant knowledge.
