PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material for a plastic optical waveguide, having excellent electric characteristics, heat resistance and transparency, and enabling a large area to be formed at a low price. SOLUTION: The material for the plastic optical waveguide for optical communication comprises a polybenzoxazole resin having a structure obtained by ring-closing of a polybenzoxazole precursor having a repeating unit represented by general formula (A) [wherein, m is an integer satisfying the relation of 0<m≤1,000; R<SB>1</SB>to R<SB>4</SB>are each a hydrogen atom or a monovalent organic group; X is a tetravalent organic group; Y is a divalent organic group selected from groups represented by formulas (B), (C), (D), (E), (F) and (G); and Z is a monovalent organic group].
