PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily check the residual quantity of a secondary battery while minimizing the cost increase of charging equipment and the increment of its size. SOLUTION: This is a battery charger 900 which houses a battery pack 300 and can be mounted on and removed from an ink jet printer 800 capable of being driven by the power from the battery pack 300. This has a serial communication part 422 which receives, from the ink jet printer 800, the information about the residual quantity of the battery detected by the ink jet printer 800, and an indicator 909 which indicates the residual quantity of the battery, based on the information about the residual quantity received by this serial communication part 422.
