PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyte for driving electrolytic capacitor that prolongs the life of electrolytic capacitors. SOLUTION: This electrolyte is characterized in that ethylene glycol is used as a principle solvent and a carboxylic acid or its sale and/or boric acid or its salt and 0.1 to 5.0 wt% 5-phenyl-2-furan carboxylic acid shown by the general formula are dissolved. As the calboxylic acid, there are, for example, azelaic acid, sebacic acid, 1,6-decane dicarboxylic acid, 5,6-decane dicarboxylic acid, 7-vinyl hexadescene-1,16-dicarboxylic acid, etc. As the salt of the calboxylic acid, there are, for example, a first-class amine salt of methyl amine, ethylamine, etc., a second-class salt of methyl amine, ethylamine, etc., a third-class salt of methyl amine, ethylamine, etc., and a fourth-class ammonium salt of tetramethyl ammonium, trimethyl ammonium, etc., in addition to ammonium salt.
