PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lifter which enhances holding capacity of a platform at its lifted position. SOLUTION: An arm 14 of a carriage 13 is supported on a rail of a floor. A tower rail is vertically movably supported through an elevating mechanism at a rear end 16 of the arm 14. A hinge plate 31 is fixed to the tower rail. A turning plate is mounted on the hinge plate 31. The platform is foldably supported with a support plate of the turning plate and a link arm. A striker 52 is mounted on the hinge plate 31 fixed to the tower rail. A latch 61 comprising a pair with the striker 52 is mounted on the carriage 13. With the platform lifted to getting on and off position of a wheelchair, the striker 52 on the hinge plate 31 goes into a channel 62 of the latch 61. The latch 61 is mounted on a position lockable with a lock pawl 63. The latch 61 and the striker 52 constitute a holding means to hold the height position of the platform relative to the carriage 13.
