PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of manufacturing a display device whose cell gap is uniformly maintained and which has no display unevenness. SOLUTION: A plurality of columnar spacers are formed on a substrate on which a plurality of pixel electrodes are formed, and a film of a coating material having a flat surface is formed on the substrate on which the plurality of columnar spacers are formed so that the head parts of the columnar spacers are protruded from the surface of the film of the coating material. The upper surfaces of the plurality of columnar spacers are leveled down to the height of the surface of the film of the coating material by polishing the protruded head parts of the columnar spacers by adopting the surface of the film of the coating material as a standard surface.
