Chemically bonding (P1) a compound to a surface-immobilized functional group comprising contacting the surface separately with a coupling reagent and the compound, is new. Independent claims are also included for: (1) process (P2) for chemically bonding a compound to a surface-immobilized functional group, comprising contacting the surface separately with a mixture of a coupling reagent and the compound and with a base; (2) process (P3) for chemically bonding a compound to surface-immobilized functional groups at multiple sites on a surface, comprising contacting the surface with a coupling agent and the compound at at least one site, repeating the contacting step at one or more other sites, and contacting the surface with a base; (3) process (P4) for chemically bonding a compound to surface-immobilized functional groups at multiple sites on a surface, comprising contacting the surface with a coupling agent and the compound at at least one site, contacting the surface with a base, repeating the two contacting steps at one or more other sites; and (4) surface with an immobilized compound produced by process P1-P4.
