PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for balancing a load of a multi-virtual channel in an ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode) system are provided to disperse a load lopsided to one virtual channel as an amount of signaling and maintenance traffic increases. CONSTITUTION: A PVC manager reads a state of an updated virtual channel and a corresponding normal count(good_cnt)(600). If the virtual state is in a good condition(605), The PVC manager checks whether the normal count(good_cnt) exceeds a predetermined number of times(630). If the normal count(good_cnt) exceeds the predetermined number of times, the PVC manager sets a channel ID of a node pointer as the updated virtual channel, a flag as ON, and the next as null(635). The PVC manager checks whether the uppermost element of a load balancing list is null(640). If the uppermost element is null, since it means that there is no virtual channel in the load balancing list, the PVC manager sets both the uppermost element of the load balancing list and the lowermost element as the node pointers(650).
