A spectrometer has a main slit 5 passing light from source 9 to dispersion means 7, such as a grating, a photographic plate 8 to receive the full height of the resulting spectrum image, and an imaging slit 12 transverse to slit 5 which is axially adjustable to vary the magnification in the longitudinal direction of the image, said image being a real image of the source 9. The spectral line images so produced are images of the spatial distribution of excited ions in the source. An auxiliary masking slit 6 may be included. |
