PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a drive unit which has a smaller outer size, especially a smaller width or both of a smaller width and a smaller length than the conventional art and moreover which does not affect the work using an object to be driven at all, more specifically to provide a very useful drive unit in which a motor does not interrupt the course of a wire so that the wire can be wound freely from an arbitrary direction when the object to be driven is a drum mechanism for winding a wire. SOLUTION: The drive unit comprises an output shaft 3 connected to the object to be driven, a gear wheel 4 connected to the output shaft 3, a pinion 5 which transmits the torque to the gear wheel 4, a frame body 6 which rotatably supports the output shaft 3(the gear wheel 4) and the pinion 5, the motor 1 and a reduction gear 2 which is arranged in a line along the rotating axis of the motor 1 and which is united with the motor 1. The reduction gear 2 is attached to the side of the frame body 6. The motor 1 is supported by the frame body 6 via the reduction gear 2.
