The same reversible plate (8) covers recesses (10a, 10b) in the working surface (7) at each end position of the sewing machine (2). With the machine swung (6) into one position, the plate is laid in the recess with one of its surfaces uppermost. In the other position of the machine, it is inverted. The resting recess (10a, 10b) is below the machine. The plate is shorter in the swinging direction than the recess (7). The recess is mirror-symmetrical with respect to a plane of symmetry (9), in which the pivotal axis of the machine may also lie. Pivoting takes place through about 90[deg]. The machine is fastened to a turntable.
