PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thickness detector for paper sheets in which a posture of detecting the thickness of the paper sheets accurately can be assumed at all times without relying upon manpower such as maintenance crews, or a regulation medium such as a calibration sheet. SOLUTION: A sensor 2 and a displacing means 3A are provided on the opposite sides of a paper passage 1. The displacing means 3A can displace a contactor 2a by a specified reference displacement amount (substantially, in the thickness direction of the paper sheets) at any time by driving an abutting plate 30 to be displaced by drive mechanisms 31-34. Since the contactor 2a is displaced by the reference displacement amount at any time by the displacing means 3A, an output value (reference output value) corresponding to the reference displacement amount can be obtained from the sensor 2.
