<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form an image with less fog by enhancing the linearity of a gradation γ characteristic, reproducing a high-light part so as to impart a high density thereto and also reproducing a shadow part so as to prevent damage to it. <P>SOLUTION: In the image forming method including the step of applying a development bias of overlapping DC and AC components to a developer carrier, one period of the AC component comprises: a first time T1 for generating an electric field in a peeling direction where toner is peeled from the image carrier to a developer carrier; a second time T2 for generating an electric field in a developing direction where the toner is transferred to the image carrier from the developer carrier; a third time T3 for generating an electric field in a peeling direction where the toner is peeled from the image carrier to the developer carrier; and a fourth time T4 for generating an electric field in a developing direction where the toner is transferred from the developer carrier to the image carrier.
