PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit the diffusion of various chemicals in thermally developable materials. SOLUTION: The thermally developable materials include a support and have on the support one or more imaging layers containing a binder and reactively associated (a) a non-photosensitive source of reducible silver ions including an organic silver salt and (b) a reducer composition for the reducible silver ions. Disposed over the one or more imaging layers is a barrier layer that comprises inorganic filler particles having a length to thickness ratio of from 10 to 1,000 and it is characterised in that the inorganic filler particles are intercalated with a hydrophilic or water-dispersible polymer or swollen with a hydrophilic or water-dispersible polymer.
