New copolymers (I) have a molecular weight of 2000-2000000 g/mole and contain (a) 0.1-99.9 mole-% units derived from a monomer of the omega -amino-alkyl or -(poly)oxyalkyl acrylate or N-(omega -amino-alkyl or -(poly)oxyalkyl)-acrylamide type as quaternized salt (1) and/or unquaternized amine (2) and (b) 0.1-99.9 mole-% units derived from other olefinically unsaturated comonomer(s) with 2-30 carbon atoms and optionally heteroatoms.
