PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely reproduce an edge part of a subject in an image, irrelevantly to its direction in a mosaic processing for generating a color image from a color mosaic image, or in a processing for interpolating defective pixels of an image. SOLUTION: An interest pixel determination part 20 determines a pixel included in a local area around a pixel of interest. An edge direction calculation part 21 calculates the edge-directional vector and edge size of the local area. A weight calculation part 22 calculates a weight coefficient of a sample pixel used for interpolation. A 1st interpolation part 23 performs a weighted interpolating operation using the pixel value of the sample pixel and the weight coefficient. A 2nd interpolation part 24 performs a linear interpolating operation using pixels included in the local area. A selector 25 outputs a 1st interpolated value or 2nd interpolated value according to the edge size. The present invention is applicable to a digital video camera, a digital still camera, and a scanner which have a single-plate type CCD mounted. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI
