PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the external control apparatus for a camera, the apparatus being strong enough to withstand a failure and excellently coping with the occurrence of the failure, whereby an unattended digital camera rental system can properly be realized and operated at a low cost. SOLUTION: The apparatus is configured to / from which a digital camera is attachable / detachable and used for external control of the digital camera. The apparatus includes: an image data read means 205 connected to the digital camera and for reading image data recorded inside the camera; a transmission means 206 for transmitting the image data read by the image data read means 205; and a fault diagnostic means 212 for issuing a prescribed command to the digital camera to make the digital camera perform a prescribed operation thereby diagnosing its failure.
