PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect an electric discharge condition contributing to machining even when the electric discharge condition is frequently changed with the mixture of electric discharge and short-circuit. SOLUTION: Pulse voltage is applied from a pulse power supply 10 to a gap formed between a work W and an electrode 14 connected to each other via two lead wires. During electric discharge machining of the work W located in the gap, along the two lead wires and a loop formed by the work W and the electrode 14, two-circuit loop antennas 16 are arranged each having an opening end and consisting of two circular conductors electromagnetically coupled, and negative resistances R1, R2 are connected to the opening ends of the loop antennas, respectively. High frequency voltage generated across one negative resistance R1 is detected by a wave detecting means 18, the generation frequency of the high frequency voltage is counted by a counter 20, a movable table 24A is moved in accordance with the generation frequency, and the discharge gap between the work W and the electrode 14 is adjusted.
