PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tool exchange position setting method for setting the exchange position of a tool while reflecting the shape of the tool to be actually used. SOLUTION: The maximum length of the tool mountable on a spindle 13 is divided into a plurality of length sections and a multistage shape obtained by setting the maximum diameter of the tool adoptable for each length section is defined as the virtual shape of a maximum tool Tm mountable on the spindle 13. When a distance▵Z between the spindle 13 and a table 14 along a Z-axial direction is a preset distance, a relative position between the spindle 13 and the table 14 is calculated where a distance▵X along a X-axial direction is the shortest and the operation range of the virtual tool Tm during tool exchange has no interference with the table 14.
