FILLED CORE OPTICAL FIBER AND METHOD FOR FORMING FILLED CORE OPTICAL FIBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hollow core fiber which is filled with an optically active material to easily be coupled with a standard optical transmission fiber and a method for forming such a fiber.

SOLUTION: A core fiber has both its ends smashed after the active optical material 20 is introduced into its hollow core area to become a filled core optical fiber. Smashing the fiber at both its ends functions to "pinch off" the active material 20 (liquid or solid) in the fiber structure and smash a clad layer ring 12 surrounding the core in the hollow core area on both the sides of the active material 20.The filled core fiber is then sealed and can be coupled with a standard fiber by using the conventional splicing process.
