PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus by which the precise electric characteristic of a transfer roller is obtained. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus is provided with the transfer roller 30 to transfer toner on a photoreceptive drum 27 to paper 3, a cleaning roller 200 to remove a foreign matter on the transfer roller 30 and an electric characteristic detecting means to detect the electric characteristic of the transfer roller 30 by applying bias between the transfer roller 30 and the cleaning roller 200 in a state in which the transfer roller 30 is in contact with the cleaning roller 200, and the bias is applied between the transfer roller 30 and the cleaning roller 200 in a state in which the transfer roller 30 is separated from the photoreceptive drum 27, so that the electric characteristic of the transfer roller 30 is detected.
