A multi disc friction brake for an automatic transmission has two sets of return springs between the hydraulic piston (32) and the transmission. The springs comprise coil springs spaced around the circular brake assembly. The first springs (38) have a constant grip between the piston and a backing plate (50) fitted to the transmission. The second set of springs (48) and harder than the first set and are held between the backing plate and front support plate (52) and are engaged when the piston has travelled a set distance (s', s) after which the friction discs start to grip. The brake action requires an initially small force to engage the brake discs followed by a progressively increasing force. |
