A vehicle body closure latch comprises a support frame 18, a latch member 24 mounted on the frame for movement between latching and unlatching positions, a detent 46 mounted on the frame for movement between a holding position and a release position in which holding position it holds the latch member in its latching position, a shaft 62 mounted on the frame, an operating member 68 mounted on the shaft for axial and rotational movements relative thereto, a part of the operating member being engageable with the detent upon axial movement of the operating member to move the detent from its holding position to its release position when the operating member occupies a first rotational position relative to the shaft or latch release arrangement for moving the operating member axially of the shaft, a locking member 76 mounted on the frame for movement between locking and unlocking positions, the locking member and operating member having interengaging portions for locating the operating member in said first rotational position when the locking member is in its unlocking position and for locating the operating member in a second rotational position relative to the shaft when the locking member is in its locking position, there being no interengagement between said part of the operating member and the detent upon axial movement of the operating member when the latter is in said second rotational position. In the construction shown the release arrangement comprise a rod 100 connected to a push button assembly (not shown) incorporated in an outside door handle, the movement of the push button being transferred to the rod via a bell crank lever or other transfer means; the rod engages an upper flange 70 of the operating member and moves the operating member against the bias of a spring 74. The release arrangement also includes a transfer lever 110 one leg of which extends through a slot 116 of the operating member 68, the other leg overlying a bell crank remote lever 118 which is connected via a rod 124 to an inside handle not shown. The locking member 76 is a lever, one arm 82 of which is connected to an outside cylinder lock mechanism not shown and the other arm being connected by a rod 86 to an inside garnish button. If the locking member is in the locking position when the door to which the latch is fitted is open, closing of the door causes the latch member 24 to rotate clockwise from the unlatching to the latching position when the latch member engages the keeper and this causes the detent to swing counterclockwise and a lateral tab 130 of the detent engages a tab 128 of the operating member to swing the member clockwise which in turn moves the locking member to the unlocking position for automatic undogging. The automatic undogging can however be prevented if the outside push button is held depressed the operating member being then in a position in which the tabs 128 and 130 cannot engage.</p>
