A cable system (40) includes a headend (41) for providing forward signals in a high frequency band and a cable node (42), the node is connected to the headend via a two-way communication path, the system includes a major trunk (45) having a plurality of forward amplifiers (47,48) there along, the system includes a plurality of feeder lines (56,61,66) each extending between ones of the amplifiers and feeder line ends, each of the feeder lines includes a terminal amplifier (57) at a first position before anyone of the plurality of feeder line ends, the system includes first means for receiving the forward signals and second means responsive to the forward signals for retransmitting the signals in a high frequency band, the first and second means are located in each feeder line at the first position, the system includes a return communication path connected between each of the second means and the node.
