PURPOSE: Provided is an umbrella frame device which is operated conveniently and comfortably to spread and collapse a canopy, and which has a simple construction to facilitate assembly. CONSTITUTION: The umbrella frame device includes a runner(20) slidably sleeved on a stem(10) for spreading and collapsing a canopy. A retaining member(22) has a retaining end(222) which is radially movable at a slot(24) in the runner(20) and which is extendable inwardly of the runner(20) to slidably contact a slideway on a protuberance(113) disposed on the stem(10). The retaining end(222) is brought to slip over an upper edge of the protuberance(113) so as to be retained on a shoulder(13) when the runner(20) is moved to an engaging position. A sleeve member(30) surrounds the runner and is movable relative to the runner(20), and has a cam surface portion(31) which can depress the retaining end(222) radially with a friction force that arrests the runner(222) in the engaging position.
