PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a failure in photographing due to capacity shortage of a battery by taking the residual photographable number of a recording medium into consideration and shifting the mode to a low power consumption mode in a digital camera provided with a function of shifting from a normal operation mode to the low power consumption mode corresponding to the residual capacity of the battery. SOLUTION: The control method includes: a step S201 of calculating the residual capacity of the recording medium; steps S203, S204 and S205 of varying the judgement reference value of the residual capacity of the battery to a given setting value corresponding to the calculated value of the residual capacity of the recording medium such that the judgement reference value is increased in the case that the calculated value is larger than a prescribed value and the judgement reference value is reduced in the case that the calculated value is smaller than the prescribed value; and steps S206 and S207 of shifting to the low power consumption mode in the case of detecting that the residual capacity of the battery becomes lower than the judgement reference value.
