The sliding buffer (14) is installed on the end portion (10) of a rail (12) to stop trains running off the end. The buffer has a sloping front face (16) which may catch a wheel and has a spring buffer (20) on its rear face. This may contact a fixed buffer (22) on a reinforced (24) section at the extreme end of the rail. The sliding buffer is held by braking clamps engaging the head of the rail.
