PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic clinical thermometer which can be conveniently used and can display characters and/or symbols in multiple directions. SOLUTION: A display 11 of the electronic clinical thermometer is provided with an identifiable signal 12 which includes multi-directional characters or (and) symbols. The electronic clinical thermometer is provided with a direction sensor 16, and when measurement is made using the clinical thermometer in general normal operating direction, the identification signal 12 is displayed in an upright position facing the user. When the clinical thermometer is reversed, the direction sensor 16 generates a directional signal due to the gravity. A measurement circuit in the clinical thermometer receives the signal, and immediately outputs the signal to maintain the signal in the state where it is displayed in the display 11 at in an upright position (not inverted) with respect to the user.
