A spectroscopic sample holder (500) comprises a microporous sheet (512). The microporous sheet (512) has a top surface, a bottom surface substantially parallel to the top surface, and at least one side surface oriented substantially perpendicular to the top and bottom surfaces. The side surface forms an exposed transit opening (518) configured to contact a material samp le (S) and distribute the contacted material sample (S) into the microporous sheet (512). The spectroscopic sample holder (500) further comprises a first planar support member (514) positioned on, and substantially parallel to, th e top surface of the microporous sheet (512). The spectroscopic sample holder (500) further comprises a second planar support member (514) positioned on t he bottom surface of the microporous sheet (512), and oriented substantially parallel to the first planar support member (514).
