<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a picture display device using a non-light-emitting spatial optical modulation element in which the spatial optical modulation element is efficiently illuminated without causing the complication of constitution and the troublesomeness of manufacture. <P>SOLUTION: Light from a light source 2 is transmitted through a polarized light conversion element 3, and only a specified polarized light component is restored by a reflection type polarizing plate 5, transmitted through the element 3 again, and restored to the plate 5 side by a reflection mirror 1. The polarized light conversion element 3 is constituted of a phase difference plate which is divided into a plurality of fan-shaped areas and whose characteristic is set for each area. When the light reflected by the plate 5 and restored to the element 3 is transmitted through one area, reflected by the reflector 1 and transmitted through another area, it is made the light in a polarized light state transmitted through the reflection type polarizing plate 5. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI |
