PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element having high performance while having a positive hole transportation layer formed of a polymer formed into a film by a coating method. SOLUTION: This organic electroluminescent element is provided with the positive hole transportation layer formed of aπ-conjugated polymer comprising repeating units expressed by general formula I, wherein X is an aryl group that may have an alkyl group or a substituted group. Particularly, theπ-conjugated polymer where the group X is an aryl group having a sulfonic acid group (that may have a shape of an alkaline metal salt) is water-soluble, and for instance, the positive hole transportation layer can be formed by using a water/ethanol solution of the polymer by a coating method.
