PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide improved apparatus and method for automatically manufacturing a preparative ply with a butt joint.

SOLUTION: An engaging driving apparatus 36 has an upper part rack pair 50, a lower part rack pair 52 adjoining the upper part rack pair 50, a clamp driving apparatus, and the engaging driving apparatus 83. The clamp driving apparatus is connected with the upper part rack pair 50 to move the upper part rack pair 50 toward the lower part rack pair 52. The engaging driving apparatus 83 are connected with the upper part rack pair 50 and the lower part rack pair 52 to simultaneously and mutually move all the rack pairs 50 and 52.
