PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-coated cemented carbide cutting tool having a hard coating layer exhibiting superior abrasion resistance under a high speed heavy cutting condition. SOLUTION: This surface-coated cemented carbide cutting tool is formed by depositing the hard coating layer on a cemented carbide base body surface in the whole average layer thickness of 1 to 15μm. The hard coating layer has a component concentration distribution structure that a maximum content point of Ti and nitrogen and a maximum content point of Zr and carbon alternately repeatedly exist at a prescribed interval and the content of Ti and Zr and nitrogen and carbon continuously changes between both points in the layer thickness direction. The maximum content point of Ti and nitrogen satisfies the composition formula : (Ti<SB>1-(X+Y)</SB>Zr<SB>X</SB>Al<SB>Y</SB>)N<SB>1-Z</SB>C<SB>Z</SB>(here, X, 0.15 to 0.30; Y, 0.01 to 0.10; and Z, 0.02 to 0.20 in the atomic ratio), and the maximum content point of Zr and carbon satisfies the composition formula : (Zr<SB>1-(A+B)</SB>Ti<SB>A</SB>Al<SB>B</SB>)C<SB>1-M</SB>N<SB>M</SB>(here, A, 0.15 to 0.30; B, 0.01 to 0.10; and M, 0.02 to 0.20 in the atomic ratio).
