PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a digital electronic still camera in which communications with external equipment can be easily performed to improve operability. SOLUTION: When a communication device 24 is linked via a communication line, a CPU 26 detects presence/non-presence of a data terminal preparation completion signal of a communication I/F 23 to judge whether a transceiver circuit 25 on the opposite side is in an operable state, and when it is in the operable state, a camera side is set into communicable state. In such a state, a transmission/reception changeover switch 21a provided in an operating part 21 is operated, and when it is desired to transmit data to the communication device 24, the switch is turned on to a transmitting side to send image/audio decoded data or data which are not compressed to the communication device 24 via the communication I/F 23 and the transceiver circuit 25. When it is desired to receive data from the communication device 24, the switch is turned on to a receiving side to receive data via the communication I/F 23 and the transceiver circuit 25 to record the data on a PC card 16 after digital signal processing.
