PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely detect the use of a thread, cutting of the thread, etc., without damaging a sewing condition by picking up the image of a sewing thread. SOLUTION: In this thread use detector for a sewing machine, a head part 5 provided on a base 1 of the sewing machine consists of: a main body 6 fixed to a head supporter 4; and a needle bar case 7 and a thread tension table 9 which can be moved in left and right directions with respect to the head main body 6. Further, this detector supplies embroidery threads S pulled out from needle thread bobbins 12A, 12B and 12C at a thread stand table 12 to a sewing machine needle 21 via thread spreading devices 13, thread tensions 14, thread guides 15, 16 and a sprawl wire 19. On the upper surface side of the head main body 6, a CCD camera 31 is provided via a bracket etc. By picking up the image of the embroidery threads S moved along a thread path in front of it with a camera 31, the moving quantity of the embroidery threads S is calculated and obtained from image data.
