PURPOSE: A method for recognizing a super audio disc is provided to supply a disc driver which can recognize a super audio disc of a hybrid layer based on monitored results about a level of a focus error signal or an RF sum-signal, thereby recognizing various disc types. CONSTITUTION: A system controller moves an objective lens to the lowest value of a focus mobile range(501), and monitors a level of either an RF sum-signal or a focus error signal(502). When a surface of a disc is detected(503), the system controller starts counting a time(504). If a layer '0' of the disc is detected, the system controller sets the counted time to the first distance value(506), and starts counting a time for a section between the layer '0' and a layer '1'(507). If the layer '1' of the disc is detected(508), the system controller sets the counted time to the second distance value(509), and compares whether the first and second distance values are identical(510). If so, the system controller recognizes the disc as a hybrid layer super audio disc(511).
