PURPOSE: A method for performing a decoding process by coping with picture type loss in a video phone system is provided to recover picture type information caused by picture type loss by using GOB(Group of Blocks) information and payload format information transmitted with compressed/coded video data, thereby reducing a decoding error. CONSTITUTION: A packet is inputted(S401), and is depacketized(S402). A system decides whether a GOB header exists(S403). If so, a GFID(GOB Frame ID) is checked(S404), and the system compares a GFID of a previous packet with the retrieved GFID(S405). If the compared GFIDs have the same values, the system uses a picture type of the previous packet for decoding(S406). If the GOB header does not exist, the system uses a picture type bit included in extracted payload information(S407). The system performs the decoding process by using 1-bit information as a picture type of a current packet(S408).
