PURPOSE: A method for controlling the operation of a heat pump system is provided to control an opening value of an electronic expansion valve according to a target opening value set by a capacity of a driven compressor and a current superheat degree error, thereby speedily resolving a cooling/heating load and preventing the superheating of the compressor. CONSTITUTION: A method for controlling the operation of a heat pump system includes the steps of driving at least one or more compressors to vary a capacity according to a cooling/heating load(S2), and measuring a current superheat degree(T) for a set time period(t) while the compressors are driven(S3). A target opening value(Po) is set by a capacity of the driven compressors and a current superheat degree error(Te)(S6), and an opening value of an electronic expansion valve is controlled to the target opening value(S7). The current superheat degree error is a difference value between the measured current superheat degree and a set target superheat degree(To)(S4).
