New 4-substituted benzothioic acid fluoroalkyl esters, e.g. for producing polymers in coatings and as liquid crystals

4-Substituted benzothioic acid fluoroalkyl esters (I) are new. 4-Substituted benzothioic acid fluoroalkyl esters of formula (I) are new: R1 = Rf(CH2)m; Rf = 1-22C perfluoroalkyl; m = 1-12; R2 = (CH2)pH, (CH2)qCH=CH2 or ((CH2)rO)tC(O)CR=CH2; r = 0-12; t = 1 when r more than 1 or t = 0 when r = 0; p = 0 - 26; q = 0 - 27; and R = H or Me. Independent claims are also included for: (1) polymers produced by polymerizing a monomer composition containing (I); (2) depositing a surface coating using (I), either neat, in solution or by a cold plasma method; and (3) composition containing (I) for protecting substrates selected from polymers, metals and building materials.
