A catalyst composition for the polymerization of diolefins comprises (1) a transition metal salt e.g. TiCl 4 or VCl 4 , and (2) a bifunctional radical having organometallic groupings at each end and (a) when the organometallic groupings contain only metals of Groups I and II of the Mendeleeff Periodic Table the bifunctional compounds have the general formula, Me 1 Me 2 X 1 X 2 PMe 1 Me 2 X 1 X 2 , (b) when the organometallic groups contain only metals of Groups I and III, the compounds have the general formula, Me 1 Me 3 X 1 X 2 X 3 PMe 1 Me 3 X 1 X 2 X 3 , (c) when the organometallic groups contain only metals of Group IV the compounds have the general formula, Me 2 X 1 PMe 2 X 1 , and (d) when the organometallic groups contain only metals of Group III, the compounds have the general formula, Me 3 X 1 X 2 PMe 3 X 1 X 2 , and in all cases Me 1 is an alkali metal, Me 2 is a metal of Group II, Me 3 is a metal of Group III, P is a radical or residue of an oligomer of a diene and X 1 , X 2 , X 3 , represent hydrogen, an alkyl radical, an aryl radical, -OR, -NR 2 , and similar substituents in which R is an alkyl, aralkyl, or an aryl radical. The bifunctional compounds may be made as described in Specification 1,159,575. Diolefins such as butadiene, isoprene and mixtures thereof, are polymerized in bulk or in an inert hydrocarbon solvent at temperatures of 0‹ to 80‹ C. The polymers have a high cis-1,4 configuration.
