PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper feeder capable of easily detecting remaining quantity of paper sheets stored in a paper tray, without correction and the like by a user. SOLUTION: A pickup roller 3 and a rotating plate 6 are fixed with an arm 5 such that the rotating plate 6 is moved along with the movement of the pickup roller 3 in accordance with the remaining quantity of the paper sheets P. Since a detector 7 detects not only the rotational speed of the pickup roller 3 but also the position of the rotating plate 6 after its movement, the rotational speed of the pickup roller 3 can be maintained at a certain level, the paper sheets P can be fed out at a certain speed, and jams can be prevented. In addition, since the detector 7 can detect the remaining quantity of the paper sheets P by detecting the position of the rotating plate 6, the necessity to provide a conventional mechanism for detecting the remaining quantity of the paper sheets P is eliminated, which enables reduction in the number of components and in costs.
