<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine starting device A for reducing emission (HC) even when a catalyst is in an inactive condition. <P>SOLUTION: A motor used for a starter 1 has a series coil 4 and a shunt coil 6. A field current flowing in the shunt coil 6 is controlled to be reduced for variation in output characteristic between a high torque mode and a high speed rotation mode. Whether the catalyst is in an inactive condition or not is determined at starting the engine. When that it is in the inactive condition is determined, the field current in the motor is reduced to control the output characteristic of the starter 1 into the high speed rotation mode, whereby the engine can be driven in high speed rotation. Thus, an engine speed at starting is higher than in a normal condition (the catalyst is in an active condition) and so less fuel resides in an intake port or a cylinder to make the injected fuel properly contribute to combustion. As a result, emission (HC) to be released into the air is reduced even when the catalyst is in the inactive condition. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO&NCIPI</p> |
