PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a self-traveling type manual wheelchair in which traveling drive force is increased by making a rider switch a speed ratio appropriately in traveling an upward slope, going over a small step and traveling an uneven road surface, a braking unit to which an advance freeing and retreat locking function advantageous for upward slope traveling is imparted is provided and an armrest is not pressed down even when a fixing screw is loosely tightened. SOLUTION: In the self-traveling type manual wheelchair, a speed reduction function is interposed between a driving wheel 7 and a traveling wheel 6, the drive force of the traveling wheel is increased by making the rider himself/herself operate a switching lever 10, and advance freeing and retreat locking are made possible by bringing one unidirectional clutch into press contact with the traveling wheel by the lever operation of a braking unit 11. An arm plate 13 fixed to an armrest 14 is provided with a guide slit which is provided with an inclined groove. Thus, the armrest 14 is not pressed downwards by loads from above.
